Progress, and Feedback

So essentially I have been very busy with Color guard, Finals, and AP Exams and have not had the chance to get much of anything done. I did, however, make some progress, I created those cardboard stands with pictures I said I would do eventually. Using those I am having students mark with a marker things they would most like the maker space to be like, this is very helpful because not only am I getting information about what my audience would like I am actually getting real data to help me design the environment. They are currently in my English classroom and were there for two days. I eventually would like to have them in the library so that I can get an ever wider audience. I might make more boards to hold more images if I want feedback on other ideas.20170511_094136

Another thing that has happened is that I was supposed to go to a meeting for the school’s group of teachers who are interested in creating this sort of space, but it was canceled and rescheduled and I am still going to go to it but it will be too late to really use any info from it in my project.

I’m Late, I’m Late! Time to Panic!

Well, I had a long Easter break and ended up working on an AP project instead of getting 20Time work done so I am a bit behind schedule. I wanted to have a final layout for the room by two days ago but because I would like to get input from possible users of the space, those users are the students of my school and while I can’t survey everybody in the school I can possibly get some feedback on what a makerspace should be like in my school. I am constructing large cardboard panels with pictures of different makerspaces and resources on them. By having students put stickers on the pictures they like I can gain a better understanding of what they would like the space to be like.41677 On top of all of this I would like to create the 3D environment so that I can use Virtual reality to demonstrate what the space would look like from the perspective of being inside of it. I believe that by using the software SketchUp I can find a plugin to allow Google Cardboard functionality.

Something really cool that I did recently was I got to talk to a designer who is innovating my middle school’s library. I ran my ideas by him and got some feedback on how to better understand what a client might want and how to better incorporate a makerspace into my school. I also talked to him about how do I keep flexibility in this room. He suggested that everything or at least most things have wheels and can be moved around or go outside so that we can really be compatible for any project.

I will definitely be using that meeting to my advantage and use it to further my own designs. Another aspect of 20Time is that I have to write a research paper on something related to my project. I am still trying to think of what exactly it should be on and what book resource I should use as a source for it. But this all for now!

Time To Not Procrastinate

Well I still have a lot of work to do in this project, I have basically accomplished nothing, good job me….. I think right about now is when my teacher will be thinking to himself “Of course he has nothing done, what did I expect….”. However I think now will be a good time to plan out what I want to get done and give myself a sort of schedule so that I can better plan out my project. I will put that closer to the end of the post and talk about a few gaps in what I know right now. First lets address the fact that I might have a sorta mentor. Our librarian Mrs. Lainhart is also interested in having a design lab for the school. I would like at some point to talk more about it and understand what her vision for it is. I did hear that she is putting together a survey for students to gauge what their expectations or reaction would be to a space like this. This would be incredibly helpful for my project.

April 18 Deliverables Final Idea for room layout,
April 28 Deliverables A Real world mock up, made of materials I can find and stuff.
May 2 Deliverables Blog #8 an a 3d version in sketchup of the room
May 10 Have some people look at the project, let them make suggestions, point out flaws, tell me their concerns, and hopes.
May 16 Deliverables Blog #10 and A pretty good estimate at what this would cost, and different options we have. Then sometime between now and may 30 present to somebody important.
May 30 Deliverables Projects due…or next week.

The above chart is simply some milestones that I would like to have achieved on these dates, now whether this ever gets done I up to me. I hopefully will not procrastinate and maybe just maybe this will actually happen.

Post Project Pitch

Well as of  now I finally had other human beings besides my teacher take a look at what in particular I am interested in doing. Which changed since my last post, instead of a technology lounge I have Changed My project into designing a Maker Space for my High School in a lesser used computer lab. So first of all for those of you who are unaware of what a Maker Space is. A Maker Space according to Dianna Rendina, you can check out her blog post here,  “is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials”. To further explain that in these spaces students have tools like 3-d Printer, computers, Lego’s, robots, and recycled materials to create and design and build whatever they would like. To give you a small idea of what a space can have in it here is a picture from Wikipedia.1024px-2016_09_uj_meet_up_makerspace_c_lukas_boxberger

This particular space has students working on a variety of projects. One seems to be working on a computer with a 3-d printer next to him as well as a student building a computer and students sketching what seem to be vehicles on the windows. In just that small space you have a 3 different projects going on. This sort of space will help to create a focus on self determined and hands on learning in a school.

Anyway I presented this project to two teachers within my school and one walked away probably thinking I have no idea what I am doing and the other though it was incredible and would love to see it become a reality. The one that thinks I am crazy told me to think about budget and how to manage my resources. The one who was excited told me that this is a great idea but I will have limited access to changing of curriculum and classes. I would like to incorporate classes like math and social studies, and science but I might not be able to change the courses too much to use this space. This was only a preliminary presentation, I still do not have all the major details and won’t until I get to work on designing it.

My teacher asked me to include a timeline for what i will do till may  but i am not ready to come up with one because i need a better idea of how long everything will take so that will be posted relatively soon.

20Time Project Maybe????

So after my last two project ideas were scrapped i came up with a brand new incredibly original idea that is if fabulous. I wanted to continue in the are of technology and pursue something in that area but as i am not nearly as smart as somebody like Max Lin and unfortunate cannot create an AI to learn tic tac toe…. Instead I would like to create a technology lounge/ better use the space in our library for technological purposes. I want to make it seem a lot less closed off and make it encouraging to people to grab a laptop or use an iPad, and make technology more mobile than just sitting in rows of desks.

I have plenty of ideas on what it could look like and what it could be but i actually don’t know what we need or how to do any design sort of things. So I will need to fill out these things called empathy maps as i watch the library and just see what the people do. empathy-map-no-stickies

As i remember from my brief intro to design in 7th grade i need to design my products for the user and not for myself so i need to keep my audience in mind while i am creating my designs, i don’t really know how to do that but im sure that i will figure it out and at some point i will have something tangible for this blog nobody reads to see.
