Book Look #1

Dear Readers,

If you are growing up in this world then it is extremely important to understand modern social and political issues. It is just as important to know how to deal with them and be prepared to discuss them with others. The book Its Not Over: Getting Beyond Tolerance, Defeating Homophobia, & Winning True Equality is a must read for you. The book is written by Michelangelo Signorile and provides advice to everyone on how win equality for the LGBT+ community. In each chapter of the book Signorile addresses a different problem that prevents getting beyond tolerance of gays. These topics range from America not being educated on gays to how do we make people more comfortable with gays in public. The book does an amazing job of using stories from real people and their struggles and combining that with facts from scientific studies and data that help us reach conclusions as to why society still isn’t okay with gays.

One of the overarching ideas that Signorile pushes throughout the book is what he describes as a Victory Narrative or Victory Blindness. He describes this as the idea that we have already won against the fight against homophobia and that we have equality because we see a couple large strides in recent years that give us a false sense of victory. Signorile describes this immediately in the beginning of the book.

This is an excerpt from Chapter 1 Victory Blindness —

“…At what feels like light speed, they make momentous gains. The world begins to open its arms to them in ways they had never thought possible. The experience is powerful, exhilarating, spellbinding even. It feels like they are living in a dream. But behind that dream is reality more treacherous than many of them may vaguely imagine.”

My closing thoughts on this book is that it is a beautifully written letter to the world telling us to wake up. It shows us the reality of the world and how the fight is not over yet and that we must stay strong and have hope. It gives us advice on what needs to happen for us to win, it tells you as a single person how you can help and make a small difference, and how all of those small differences can lead to a big difference in the world around you.

I encourage all of you to read this book and to take what it says to heart.
