To Kill a Mockingbird THE POST

Scout on the left, Atticus in the middl and Jem on the righ. The Finch Family

To Kill a Mockingbird is a book all about the good and the bad of society focusing a lot on childhood innocence as well as racism in the south. It does this through the lens of Jem, and Scout Finch who are the children of Atticus Finch. As I read the book I looked closely at the character Atticus Finch, and what I found is that he is the most consistent and moral character in the history of everything, that is until the end of the book.

Essentially Atticus Finch is an attorney who has taken up the case of defending a free

Tom Robinson is on the left…..if you couldnt tell already….

African-American by the name of Tom Robinson. He has been accused of Raping Bob Ewell’s Daughter. This case is the main conflict of the story, the rest of it is in my opinion irrelevant and serves little to no purpose so I will ignore it in this post for the most part.

The case has three identifiable parts in the book, the pre-court, court, and the post-Court. In each part something different about society and racism is explored, with each part having something significant happen to every character.

First we will explore the main attraction of the pre-court part, in which Tom Robinson is to be murdered without a court case because of a mob of towns folk. This event is extremely significant for the character of scout who is maybe the dumbest character in all of fiction and somehow doesn’t get the severity of the situation. Instead of treating it as a mob going to lynch someone she sees a familiar face in the crowd who her father, Atticus, has been helping with legal matters. She just starts talking to him about his son that she knows and asks him how those legal matters where coming along. Somehow the universe thought that was enough to disperse a whole mob…..duh….. Jem on the other hand stands by his father because he has decided he wants to be more like a man even though he is just thirteen years old.

But More importantly in that scene you see the first example of difference in the good and bad of society. This is displayed through Jem and Scout as well as Atticus, Jem and Scout stand their ground against the evil mob that represents the fear and hatred of a racist southern society. Atticus characteristically stands firm and tries convincing the mob to leave by talking about morals because he is a lawyer if at this point in the book we did not already know.  We can see the good of society shown in Atticus and eventually after little to no convincing from scout we can see a sign of good in the mob as they disperse, they decided against their corrupt actions showing that despite their hatred they have good in them.

The court case is the biggest example of the good and bad in society in the whole book because *SPOILER ALERT* they don’t like black people and they convict Tom. That verdict is thought to be inevitable by most of the town and yet Atticus does his best to change the mind of the jury and at the end of the court session Atticus goes out of character in his closing remarks as described by Jem and Scout.

“Atticus paused, then he did something he didn’t ordinarily do. He unhitched his watch and chain and placed them on the table, saying, “With the court’s permission—” Judge Taylor nodded, and then Atticus did something I never saw him do before or since, in public or in private: he unbuttoned his vest, unbuttoned his collar, loosened his tie, and took off his coat. He never loosened a scrap of his clothing until he undressed at bedtime, and to Jem and me, this was the equivalent of him standing before us stark naked. We exchanged horrified glances.”

– Chapter 20 To Kill a Mockingbird

4f28158bf8f91c3245c72cf5dd3f9801The shocked children say it all, this is not something Atticus just does meaning that this moment in the book is unique. Atticus seems to be fed up, angry even by the way he addresses the whole courtroom pointing out that this case is about racism and not rape. In the middle of that speech he starts sweating, ounce again something that the children point out to be a first. Atticus seems to be truly furious considering how out of character he acts. He speaks for about 3 pages, here they if you want to read them (pages 207-209); you can feel his tone of voice change from other times he is speaking.

Post court case Atticus once again sees good in society, when explaining to Atticus how juries work and why the verdict ended up the way it did he revealed that the jury argued for more than the usual couple minutes. They even had one member, a Cunningham, a commonly known racist family, fight to acquit Tom. This once again explores more of the good in society idea in the book.

Then at the very end of the book Atticus does something extremely out of character that I actually don’t know how to explain. When Bob Ewell feels he has been humiliated by Atticus in the courtroom he attempts to kill Jem and Scout with a knife. They find Bob

Boo Radley….Looks like a drug addict….just a bit

Ewell dead instead meaning one of the kids or Boo Radley a Character that for some reason now shows up out of nowhere killed Bob. Despite Atticus’s protests he gives in to the Sheriff and agrees to cover it up and lie. This marks another change in his character that has occurred.

Atticus Finch is a fairly static character whom is regarded at the beginning as an entirely cool-headed and moral character, in the end he changed showing both the good and the bad in humanity in both the people of Maycomb and one of our main Characters, Atticus Finch.

Personally I did not enjoy the book, I felt it had a lot of irrelevant content, Most of part 1 could have been skipped over and we would still have an interesting storyline considering how much of the book consists of the pre, during, and post-trial.

Progress, and Feedback

So essentially I have been very busy with Color guard, Finals, and AP Exams and have not had the chance to get much of anything done. I did, however, make some progress, I created those cardboard stands with pictures I said I would do eventually. Using those I am having students mark with a marker things they would most like the maker space to be like, this is very helpful because not only am I getting information about what my audience would like I am actually getting real data to help me design the environment. They are currently in my English classroom and were there for two days. I eventually would like to have them in the library so that I can get an ever wider audience. I might make more boards to hold more images if I want feedback on other ideas.20170511_094136

Another thing that has happened is that I was supposed to go to a meeting for the school’s group of teachers who are interested in creating this sort of space, but it was canceled and rescheduled and I am still going to go to it but it will be too late to really use any info from it in my project.

I’m Late, I’m Late! Time to Panic!

Well, I had a long Easter break and ended up working on an AP project instead of getting 20Time work done so I am a bit behind schedule. I wanted to have a final layout for the room by two days ago but because I would like to get input from possible users of the space, those users are the students of my school and while I can’t survey everybody in the school I can possibly get some feedback on what a makerspace should be like in my school. I am constructing large cardboard panels with pictures of different makerspaces and resources on them. By having students put stickers on the pictures they like I can gain a better understanding of what they would like the space to be like.41677 On top of all of this I would like to create the 3D environment so that I can use Virtual reality to demonstrate what the space would look like from the perspective of being inside of it. I believe that by using the software SketchUp I can find a plugin to allow Google Cardboard functionality.

Something really cool that I did recently was I got to talk to a designer who is innovating my middle school’s library. I ran my ideas by him and got some feedback on how to better understand what a client might want and how to better incorporate a makerspace into my school. I also talked to him about how do I keep flexibility in this room. He suggested that everything or at least most things have wheels and can be moved around or go outside so that we can really be compatible for any project.

I will definitely be using that meeting to my advantage and use it to further my own designs. Another aspect of 20Time is that I have to write a research paper on something related to my project. I am still trying to think of what exactly it should be on and what book resource I should use as a source for it. But this all for now!

HuckleParody Finn

Well here is a different sort of blog post, for my English class we had to do a final project for Huckleberry Finn and I wanted to create some sort of satire that played off of the satire found in the novel. I was particularly interested in adapting the part of the book when Buck Grangerford explains to Huck what a feud is. I thought that putting a modern political twist on the section would make for an interesting piece.

I played with satirizing how we use social media to voice our political reasons and talk about them instead of talking in real life. This mainly came from our current president’strumptwitter-zyglis fondness for tweeting whatever comes into his head about politics. I also threw in some satire of the media where I had Huck Finn as for his viewers to subscribe to his Youtube channel and watch his videos and give him money to show how people make money off  others people’s lives, and stories, and show how selfish that practice can be sometimes.

Here is a small section of what I wrote, If you would like to read the rest you can click here.

A feud? What you talking about???

You ain’t never heard of feuds, jeez where did you get raised?
Well a feud is (sarcastically)very very simple…
So one day one Democrat fights with a republican on twitter, after the very official proceeding one man wins on account of getting the most retweets, an obviously the other man tweets the man who won the war and after that he starteda  feud. Then it gets fun, the other man’s brother tweets him, then the other brothers, on both sides go for one another; then the cousins chip in and by and by everybody is tweeted off or our phones lose power and then the feud is settled. I’m Just doin my part in my parties feud with the demo-craps

(Stares blankly at buck in disbelief.)
Well what lot a good does that accomplish, then everybody goes off is yelling about alternative facts and such and I would for one rather judge what the Kardashians were wearing last night than be  tweeted in a feud, haven’t you ever thought of maybe just talking it out in real life with more than 140 Characters?

Well I Never thought about that
(He stands up and gets out of the bush and is noticed by the Democrat)
Hey democrat, you wanna come over here and politely discuss climate change

Democrat dude:
(Yelling over at buck)
Can’t we just yell at eachother in a “Climate Change is Real” Youtube comments section!?

Time To Not Procrastinate

Well I still have a lot of work to do in this project, I have basically accomplished nothing, good job me….. I think right about now is when my teacher will be thinking to himself “Of course he has nothing done, what did I expect….”. However I think now will be a good time to plan out what I want to get done and give myself a sort of schedule so that I can better plan out my project. I will put that closer to the end of the post and talk about a few gaps in what I know right now. First lets address the fact that I might have a sorta mentor. Our librarian Mrs. Lainhart is also interested in having a design lab for the school. I would like at some point to talk more about it and understand what her vision for it is. I did hear that she is putting together a survey for students to gauge what their expectations or reaction would be to a space like this. This would be incredibly helpful for my project.

April 4 Deliverables Video Blog pitch (AMP handout)
April 18 Deliverables Final Idea for room layout,
April 28 Deliverables A Real world mock up, made of materials I can find and stuff.
May 2 Deliverables Blog #8 an a 3d version in sketchup of the room
May 10 Have some people look at the project, let them make suggestions, point out flaws, tell me their concerns, and hopes.
May 16 Deliverables Blog #10 and A pretty good estimate at what this would cost, and different options we have. Then sometime between now and may 30 present to somebody important.
May 30 Deliverables Projects due…or next week.

The above chart is simply some milestones that I would like to have achieved on these dates, now whether this ever gets done I up to me. I hopefully will not procrastinate and maybe just maybe this will actually happen.
